I found two alligator lizards one is a male and the other is a female...i want them to breed but i put a?

I put a divider between them because the male bites the females tail sometimes then I get scared but then I thought they will never get used to each other and breed so I took it off for a while but I was going to bed I was wondering if I should put the divider in then I read online that sometimes the lizards try to eat each otherr so immediatly I put it in there...they are the same size...I'm scared they might fight because the male bites the female from the back and she runs off...I read online that he might try to mate when he does that..is he trying to kill it or trying to mate with it?please answer I really wanna breed them...thanks for your help(if u help)....also they are in a 20 gallon tank with enough living space...in the daytime I take the divider off and watch them so they won't fight...please anwer...is he going to try to kill her or mate with her?thanks!
